Field trips of June 22th afternoon

Two field trips are possible but you will have to choose one !
Departure for both trips are at 1 pm in front of the University of Avignon (Conference venue).

1 - Scientific visit of the forest of Mount Ventoux

The Ecology of Mediterranean Forests unit (INRAE), the National Forest office (ONF) and the Ventoux Regional Nature Park invite you to a visit of the so called the Giant of Provence, Mont Ventoux, a unique site and open-air laboratory for the scientific research on the adaptation of forests to climate change.

Detailed programme:  

1 pm: departure

2.30 pm: stop at the village of Malaucène, welcome of the partners (ONF-PNR Ventoux) and start of the bus ride to Mont Serein. 
    - Bus A : Presentation of the ONF on the management of multifunctional forests, and of the history of the Mount Ventoux since the beginning of the Mountain Land Restoration
    - Bus B: Presentation of the Ventoux Regional Nature Park, and the research program Climate, biodiversity and sylvo-pastoralism.

3 pm: Arrival at Mont Serein
     Presentation of research programs on Mont Ventoux forest:
        - Hendrik Davi (INRAE): Long-term monitoring and functional mechanisms, in particular the Dormancy and
        - Sylvie Muratorio (INRAE): Intra-population diversity and local adaptation
        - Maurane Buradino (INRAE, to be confirmed): the pine processionary in face of climate change

4.30 pm: Departure to the summit of Mont Ventoux
    - Bus A: Presentation of the Ventoux Regional Nature Park, and the research program Climate, biodiversity and sylvo-pastoralism.
    - Bus B: Presentation of the ONF on the management of multifunctional forests, and of the history of the Mount Ventoux since the beginning of the Mountain Land Restoration.

5 pm: Arrival at the summit of Mont Ventoux: free (flyer presenting the Ventoux Regional Nature Park)

5.30 pm: Departure to Mormoiron - Château Pesquié
   6.30 Buffet in Château Pesquié gardens

9.00 pm: Return to Avignon University

Beware that Avignon climate is Mediterranean and temperature can be already hot in June. In order to enjoy your field trip, we strongly recommend that you bring with you water, sun glasses, sun screen, hat, and wear comfortable shoes (eg running shoes)

2 - Visit of Piolenc experimental vineyard

1 pm: Departure

1.45 pm: Stop at the village of Chateauneuf du Papes
    Presentation of the vineyards of the Rhone Valley from the castle of Chateauneuf du Papes

2.30 pm: Departure to Piolenc experimental vineyard

3 pm: Arrival at Piolenc experimental vineyard
    Visit and presentation of research programs with Silvere Delveze (Agriculture Chamber) and Iñaki Garcia de Cortazar-Atauri (INRAE)
        - General and historical presentation of the site
        - Adapting Mediterranean vineyards to Climate Change: field experiments about shading vegetation, irrigation, planting density and training systems.
        - Agroecological vineyard
        - Disease resistant variety evaluation trial
        - Wine tasting

5.30 pm: Departure to Mormoiron - Château Pesquié
    6.30 Buffet in Château Pesquié gardens

9.00 pm: Return to Avignon University
